"Quadradeuce" (quadradeuce)

The post yesterday about abandoned cars in Detroit got me thinking about my most hated car: The 1996-2007 Dodge Caravan. I don’t really know if there’s one thing about it that gets my blood boiling, but every time I see one on the road I desperately wish my truck came equipped with forward facing anti-aircraft guns. Maybe it’s the completely uninspiring shape, or that every one on the road looks like a prop from an off-Broadway Mad Max musical. I just hate them with the fire of a thousand suns.
You’ve all seen this driving around.
And apparently so do their drivers judging by how well they take care of them. I’ve even started playing a game. The goal is to see if I can spot a Caravan that doesn’t have a dent, rust spot, mis-colored panel, etc. I’ve only found a handful. It almost seems mandatory that the bumper corners be caved in.
So, in the spirit of my hatred of Caravans, post your most hated car. Be as specific as possible. If you say “any large CUV” I’m going to call you lame. Call out the Traverse (a hateful car) or something specific.

A number of reasons:
1.) Really nothing special and not good off road from what I’ve heard.
2.) Borderline dangerously slow
3.) They represent the SUV ALL THE FUCKING THINGS movement from the 2000's
4.) The owner stereotypes are usually true
5.) I remember back when it wasn’t “H1/H2/H3T”, etc. There was only the original Hummer and they were cool as shit at the time. The name wasn’t watered down and synonymous with douchebaggery, it was associated with Desert Storm, durability, and functionality.

Ooh, I thought of another one:
I don’t necessarily hate other people driving these but I got one as a rental once (Budget thought it would be nice to “upgrade” me to the Patriot from thr MKS I had reserved) and it was the most awful driving experience I’ve ever had (which includes a Suzuki Sidekick made out of two Sidekicks welded together). It made me angry just to drive it.

It’s a tossup for first between prius and corolla. Runners up are other beige Toyota’s (Camry, Avalon, Rav4—Sienna, though I dislike it as a car, doesn’t get the hate from me. The owners got it because they needed a minivan, often as a second car, not because they wanted an appliance), And what I like to call Honda corollas (any non Si or Sport Civic), GM corollas (Crapalier, non-SS Cobalt) and so on. Prius gives me more ammo, but the Corolla is more often the annoyance.
Let’s get something straight, I don’t really hate these as CARS. I might dislike them, the Corolla I took drivers ed in was truly woeful, but I’m OK that cars like this exist.
What I have an issue with is the people that buy them. The I don’t give a shit about driving, this is just an appliance but so help me god if you try to get by me because of my incompetance I will fucking cut your head off people. The I drive a hybrid that only gets the advertised MPG at around 3MPH and since I’m saving the planet I can go 3PMH in the fast lane because fuck you people. The my car only changes lanes to the left people. The limit is 60 I’m doing 55 and if you try to get past I’ll speed up and block you flip you off and slow down again when you get in behind people. The what’s all this lane doing at the end of the on ramp I don’t need that I’ll just “merge” at 10 MPH people. The I want to make a turn here and I see you coming so to let you know I see you I’ll wait until you’re almost here and then go at a snails pace people. The oh shit I needed to turn here I’ll just stop until people let me in and then go across wow aren’t people nice they’ve stopped for me why is that light red fuck it I’ll go anyway people. The I’m going to drag my ass and then catch the tail of a red so you get stuck people. The I drive 60 kph in a 40 kph zone 60 kph in a 60 kph zone 60 kph in a 1oo kph zone and 60 kph through stop signs people. The yield sign means yield to me right people. The I’ll creep up on the red because ain’t nobody got time for dat but I won’t accelerate when it actually goes green people.
And because these cars patronize these people, I hate them as an extension of that.
Of course, I have to admit that these vehicles do provide a public service—you see one, and realize there’s a 80% chance the driver’s a moron, alerting you that the correct course of action is to move away as many lanes as possible and bury the loud pedal so as to get by them before they realize what’s happening and put a stop to it.
Just in case.

I once got this Nissan Versa Note as a loaner while my car was in the shop, and it was the worst thing I have ever step foot in. Cheapest interior I have ever seen, and so under-powered it was almost dangerous. When I returned it and told them I was happy to be back in my car, the desk clerk even said “oh yeah that Nissan is a death box”.

well, there can be some aspects or details of some that might leave you scratching your head lol. But because there is always a contradiction and the right driver, video, or idea out there that could make any car a hero.
Also, there has been enough awkward moments to convince me that there is no need for hate.

In response to the Dodge Caravan, I feel this is largely a result of a car that people buy specifically with the knowledge that it will be abused in the most disgusting ways possible. My sister in law have one, and its got a caved in door. It’s also barely running and filled with vomit.
Here’s my submission. I can’t for the life of me think of any rational reason to buy one of these. They were stupid expensive when new, they have appalling range, and of course the driving dynamics are practically nonexistent. Nothing screams, I hate having a car like one of these.

I drive a Civic. The non-Si variety. Would I have preferred a Civic Si? Of course. But the regular Civic is good enough, and meets the needs of a daily driver quite well. And since my wife refuses to drive a manual, I couldn't get an Si, even if I wanted to. :/
But, getting back to your point, you are almost always correct about drivers of Corollas, Camrys, Accords and Civics. They seem to have the largest portion of brain dead drivers out there on the roads today.

The 1996-2007 Caravan never existed - that date range covers two model generations, 1996-2000 and 2001-2007, they were both different (i.e. different bodies, etc).
That being said, I never minded either - the fact that there are a lot of them still around proves that they have to be at least decently well-built (mind you, most of the ones here seem to be taken care of far more than the ones you mention).
I also have the rose-colored glasses from the fact that our family owned a 1993 Caravan SE from around 1995-2004 and that thing was incredibly reliable - my parents had just divorced and my twin brother and I were living with our single mom, so it never got it’s “regular maintenance” as mom could just not afford it at the time. It only got sporadic oil changes beyond recommended intervals (at least we tried not to completely ignore this), and tires when they were very worn. Otherwise, it plugged away carrying her to school (she’s a teacher) and back a 30-40 min drive each day in all weather and she and us off to our various activities (school band, extra-curricular tech work, etc). It didn’t let us down ONCE that I can ever remember except once when the fuel pump died, and even then we drove 40km after it had started making noises with it whining away and it died 250m from the dealership and we rolled into the parking lot coasting, so it got us to “safety” despite the pump dying.
Still ran fairly well when parked, although it would’ve needed rocker-panel rust repair and some engine maintenance. Mom stopped driving it in late-2004 as it was too hard to get it up our long, slippery driveway in the winter due to it’s weight and she bought a used ‘93 Chevy Cavalier V6 from our neighbours for $1300 to replace it (now THAT was a shitty car...). Sold it in early-2005.
I still miss that big, old white beast...pic from January 2005 just after mom got the Cavalier and before the Caravan was sold.
As for my most-hated car, there are really none I HATE, so to speak. I respect all brands to an extent, but I guess my least-preferred car/brand would be GM...

That's what I'm trying to say. There aren't any cars I genuinely loathe, but there are plenty I wouldn't buy either. That said, I also think it's kinda silly to judge cars based on their owners since that doesn't effect you or the car itself.

True, those are technically two different models, they both look like a plastic bag that has been over-filled with dirty diapers, so I lump them together.
I never stated they were unreliable, only that
I
hated them. And I freely admit it’s not rational. I’ve never owned one, and my parents drove GM minivans. I do know several people who have owned them over the years, and lot’s of things fell apart on them but they kept on driving. However, when I worked in a repair shop in high school, old boxy caravans used to come in ALL of the time for oil burning issues. You knew what it was before it even drive into the bay.
Anyway, death to Caravans!

The sad thing is the 90s-00s Buicks are somewhat underrated. They’re quite comfortable and that soft suspension soaks up all the bumps, and most came with the nearly bulletproof 3800 V6 while the few that didn’t came with the 3800 supercharged.
I’d take a 240hp couch over any bland daily driver, and personally, I think the mid-90s Riv to be a great looking car. Plus, you can find them all day long for under $4k with low miles, or under $2k if you don’t mind something a little more used.

It’s the Budweiser of cars. Almost everything that competes with it is better, and yet people still buy it because they’re too lazy to try anything else.
Why would anyone want a boring car when a non-boring car can do exactly the same thing and more, while being just as reliable , and not really cost any more? There is no reason. No reason whatsoever. And yet, people still buy them in droves because they’re mindlessly wandering through life, taking the path of least resistance. If they tried anything else, they would realize how shit a Camry is, but they won’t.
That’s why I hate the Camry. The Camry represents a life of chosen ignorance. A life without much thought.

Yeah, it’s not the cars with me, it’s the cars as extensions of the drivers. I tend to go by a sliding scale:
Beige Toyota: Pass at first opportunity, JUST IN CASE.
GM Corollas: Treat with suspicion. Pass if the opportunity presents itself.
Honda&Nissan Corollas: Observe behaviour. Pass at first opportunity if they show any warning signs.
Ford/Chrysler Corollas fall to either side of GM Corollas depending on the model.

I just realized... There so much annoyance for buyers of the bland Toyotas who blindly think that the big T’s reliability trumps everything, but we really should be blaming Toyota.
There’s no reason their bland section of cars should be so boring, several other manufacturers keep on showing that you can have reliability and comfort and/or fun and/or style.
It’s all Toyota’s fault.

But Toyota has no reason to change! They’ve realized they can put a slightly new face on the old car which was a slightly new face on the car before that and people will buy it thinking it’s the car Jesus himself will return with.
Toyota is resting on its laurels, because they know that the T on the front of the car is more or less a $10,000 feature that means nothing, but people lap it up.

Not really. Who the majority of the owners are is a reflection of the way the car is designed and marketed. If something is designed and marketed as a cheap, reliable, high quality appliance, it attracts beige drivers. Therefore, I can respect the car for what it is (good value) and still hate it because it successfully became a receptacle for a moron.

I figured out who buys these cars, along with Dodge Calibers and Jeep Compasses.
It’s people who have driven $1000 cars their entire life, and then they rent one or something, and it’s so much better than the $1000 cars they have been driving because it’s new. So when they finally decide they’re going to buy something nice, they go buy one, thinking it’s great.

1st gen Chevy Aveo. I don’t know why, but I always find myself being an asshole to Aveo drivers because they bought the wrong car.

That’s because the Caliber was avenging the Neon. The Avenger replaced the Stratus

A limited defense of the Leaf. Let’s say you drive not that far each day, so range is non-issue. You don’t care about dynamics, going from A to B is all that matters. Having said that, in city traffic they’re quick off the line. And the economics are not that bad. The overwhelming majority are leased, and they lease at prices of much cheaper cars. Ok, I hate them too.

I’m in the desert which demolished their range, there would be serious doubts as to whether it would make a round trip to and from work. I remember the lease terms being favorable but apart from that...

The Chevy Corvette. I have respect for its ability, but I hate it as a car. Styling is bad, the heritage is bad, engine is eh, and overall the drivers are asshats.

I am thinking about getting a van like that as a compromise to getting a 7 passenger Suburban.
I am sad.

I got stuck with one of these when my car was in the shop.
It is truly horrible. Just abysmal.

The Leaf’s EV range is nearly twice that of the period-correct (original) Chevrolet Volt. What’s wrong with that?

Here in California, I personally dislike the Toyota Highlander and Honda Pilot for being dishonest products. They have bloated so much that there is no practical reason to buy one over a Sienna or Odyssey. Yet people buy them because they want things like “space” and “practicality”.
The large CUV has the same number of seats, the same features, less space and a higher price than the MPV. It’s the most dishonestly marketed type of car—the kind that claims “practicality” but really sells image. The buyers have been conditioned into thinking that CUVs are the go-to family car.

My backdoor neighbor has the pre-facelift version (non-SS). It hasn’t moved in over 2 years. They bought a new car, but didn’t trade it in. I think it’s his prized possesion. So sad, especially since I know they needed a HUD loan to buy the house.

I checked out the Toyota lineup at last year’s auto show and I was amazed by the bloat. And I agree with you for the most part about CUVs. The only thing I can say about minvans in tht their quality is terrible. Manufacturers basically assume they are going to be moving vomitoriums, so they don’t bother to make the interior last. I’ve driven several, and I have friends who have various minivans. They all have lots of interior issues. Right now, my buddy’s caravan’s power locks don’t work. WTF, how does that happen in 2016?
My old van had all sort of interior trim pieces fall off. When I traded it in (for $1k) I just put a box of the pieces in the back. There was nothing wrong with that van mechanically, but I had to get rid of it because it was embarrassing. And this was before I had kids, so it was treated very well.

I listed the Toyota Highlander as one of the cars I dislike the most. But it’s no joke when you personally experience Toyota and Lexus being more reliable than any other brand.
I myself steer clear of Toyota because I like interesting cars, but if you’re looking for reliability, nothing has served my parents more reliably than Toyotas. After owning things like an S-class, a 5-series and some other brands, my father has settled back in the Toyota camp. His last 7 cars in southern China have been three Previas, an RX400h, an LC Prado and two Alphards.
A Honda Accord that I currently have in California does come close, but it’s not quite there. It’s got the classic Honda warpy brake discs.
Rather than engineering a car to achieve performance parameters, Toyota purposely engineers out all potential problems with thick design margins and minimum complexity.
Even when introducing revolutionary powertrains, Toyota has succeeded in making the Prius dead reliable since the very first generation. Yes, the electric power steering makes me want to shrivel up and die, and the handling makes me want to shrivel up and die, but for a non-enthusiast commuter stuck at 20 mph on I-405 in Los Angeles, just trying to get to work and save gas money, does that really matter?
